We are currently seeking a mid-level Construction Accountant for our client in the commercial construction sector in Los Angeles.

This role is ideal for an accounting professional who understands the unique rhythm of construction—project-driven financials, cost tracking across phases, subcontractor billing, and compliance work tied to contracts and regulations. If you’ve supported field teams, navigated cost codes, and turned complex project data into financial clarity, we want to hear from you.

Summary

The Construction Accountant will support project managers, operations, and finance leadership by managing job cost accounting, AIA progress billings, subcontractor pay apps, retainage tracking, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting. Experience with certified payroll / prevailing wage compliance (California public works or federally funded projects) is highly preferred. Accuracy, follow-through, and the ability to reconcile what’s happening in the field with what’s reported in the books are essential.

Essential Duties

  • Maintain job cost ledgers: code costs to the correct project, phase, and cost category; reconcile committed costs vs. actuals.
  • Prepare and submit AIA-style progress billings (G702/G703) including schedule of values, percent-complete updates, and retainage calculation.
  • Process subcontractor invoices & pay applications, verify lien waivers, retainage holds, insurance certs, and contract compliance before release.
  • Reconcile WIP schedules monthly; support revenue recognition and over/under billing analysis with project management.
  • Track change orders (approved & pending) and ensure financial impact is reflected in budget-to-actual reporting.
  • Support certified payroll / prevailing wage reporting for California public works and/or federal Davis-Bacon–covered projects (experience helpful).
  • Assist with project closeout: reconcile final costs, release retainage, verify closeout documents, finalize billing.
  • Prepare periodic cash flow projections tied to project billings, receivables status, and expected subcontractor payouts.
  • Collaborate with field supervisors, estimators, and project engineers to resolve cost coding and commitment discrepancies.
  • Assist with audit requests, lender draws, insurance reports, or bonding documentation as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management Accounting, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years in construction, GC, or subcontractor environment (job cost & WIP exposure strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on experience with construction accounting or ERP platforms (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, Procore Financials, CMiC, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of AIA billing formats, retainage, and change order workflows.
  • Familiarity with certified payroll & prevailing wage reporting in California or federal Davis-Bacon environments is a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills (lookups, pivots, conditional formulas) for reconciling cost data across systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, deadline discipline, and ability to partner with field teams.

Reasoning Ability

  • Able to interpret contract terms, schedules of values, and cost commitments to determine billing eligibility.
  • Capable of analyzing over/under billings and explaining financial variance drivers to operations leaders.
  • Skilled at navigating partial, disputed, or conditional lien releases in the billing cycle.

Work Environment

  • Office-based role with regular collaboration across accounting, project management, and field operations.
  • Occasional jobsite document review or coordination with superintendents may be required.
  • Fast-paced, project-driven environment where priorities can shift with job schedules, inspections, and draw deadlines.

Physical Demands

  • Extended computer and spreadsheet use.
  • Occasional file lifting (up to 20 lbs) and document transport to project or audit meetings.
